Cost and entry
State grammar schools are free and select mainly through the 11 Plus, with places then allocated by admissions criteria such as catchment and ranking. Independent schools charge fees and set their own entrance exams, which may include English, Maths, reasoning and often an interview.
Some children prepare for both routes at once, since the underlying skills overlap, though the exact papers and timings differ.
Choice and ethos
Independent schools vary widely in size, specialism and approach, and many offer smaller classes and broad co-curricular programmes funded by fees. Grammar schools are academically selective state schools, so they bring together able children without the cost, but places are limited and competition can be high.
Bursaries and scholarships
Cost is not always the full picture. Many independent schools offer scholarships for particular strengths and means tested bursaries that can reduce fees significantly, so it is worth asking about support before ruling a school out.
How to decide
Visit the schools you are considering, look at how each one fits your child rather than only league tables, and confirm the exact entry route and dates for each. A place that suits your child matters more than the label on the gate.
